Messara Horses
The Messara horse is an indigenous breed that evolved in Greece and is considered to be the oldest breed in Europe. This primitive breed is currently on the verge of extinction, but they can still be found on the island of Crete, off the coast of Greece. Messara horses are known for their characteristic pacing gait, which makes riding comfortable and easy.
The main coat colors found in the Messara horse are bay, brown (a variation of bay), black, and gray. They usually stand between 12.2 and 14 hands high (50 and 56 inches, 127 and 142 cm). The Messara horses retain some characteristics of their Arabian ancestors.
